Kazan chemical school has its own history since the first half of the ХIХ century. It has received world recognition through the galaxy of prominent chemists of the Kazan State University - K.K. Klaus, N.N. Zinin, A.M. Butlerov, V.V. Markovnikov, A.M. Zaitsev. A.E. Arbuzov – the Zaitsev’s follower – is a developer of the chemistry of organophosphorus compounds. He initiated the academic chemical science in Kazan. In 1945 under his active participation Kazan branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR has been established, in which the Chemical Institute was organized. A.E. Arbuzov itself became a permanent director of the Institute. In 1965 the Chemical Institute merged with Kazan Institute of Organic Chemistry, founded in 1958. As a result of merging modern Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry (IOPC), bearing the name of Academician of RAS A.E. Arbuzov arose.

Boris Aleksandrovich Arbuzov – the son of Aleksander Erminingeldovich Arbuzov became the first director of the Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry. In 1971 Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Arcady Pudovik replaced Boris Arbuzov for 18 years. In the following the Institute was headed by Professor Alexander Vereshchagin, then professor, corresponding member of Academy of Sciences of Republic of Tatarstan Elvira Batyeva. From 1990 to 2001 Academician of RAS Alexander Konovalov was the head of the A.E. Arbuzov Institute. At present the Institute is led by Academician of RAS Oleg Sinyashin.

In 1969 the Institute was rewarded with the Red Banner Labor Order for the achievements in science. In 1978 The Lenin Prize was awarded to Academician Boris Arbuzov and Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Arcady Pudovik, what proved the Institute achievements in science. The State Prizes of the USSR and the Republik of Tatarstan were also awarded to the Institute collaborators: B. Ivanov, A. Il’aysov, A. Vafina, Yu. Kargin, A. Vizel, A. Muslinkin, G. Romanov, P. Fakhretdinov, E. Batieva, Yu. Budnikova, O. Sinyashin.
